Who is Afwerk? My name is Alexandra and I live with my husband and two little cones outside Stockholm. I work as a teacher and couldn't think of a better job ... would be to work in a yarn shop then.
Are you knitting, crochet or maybe both? If both, do you prefer any technology to some type of design? I both knit and crochet even though it is currently the most knitting.
If you switch to a completely different creative activity, what do you do? In the past I painted some acrylic but right now there is not much time left besides work and the toddler's life and then knitting and crocheting are prioritized.
How did you learn to crochet / knit and when did you start creating your own design? I first started knitting about 10 years ago, inspired by my mother-in-law, but soon gave up when I thought it was so complicated to read knit patterns. The crochet came in a few years later when I was pregnant and wanted to crochet a blanket for my then future son. I learned most of it on YouTube which is a great help. I designed my own own pattern about 2 years ago and it was an online bag. Now I am back to knitting and suddenly think that it is possible to read patterns and maybe even create some of my own patterns.
What is your best advice for someone who would like to start creating their own design? It's enough to just dare to try.
How does a design idea become a finished design and how do you best put together nice color combinations? My design has probably started with a yarn that I have been thinking about what I can do with it. I love to squeeze and feel on a yarn to suddenly get an idea of what it would fit like. When I get an idea I usually rough-sketch a bit and then start testing myself. One tip is to write down everything you do for all of a sudden you have come up with something good and then it can be difficult to remember exactly how it went. Color combinations can be really difficult sometimes but I usually start from myself and what I would like at home. My biggest inspiration is probably sunsets.
Which is your favoritfärg? Pink and mustard yellow, preferably together.
What kind of yarn prefer? I love thicker yarns where the work is growing fast.
Which is your biggest knitting or crochet tab? The only thing I come up with is when I would go to a children's party and start crocheting a gift the same day. The present was not at all as I had imagined, it was, to say the least, totally ghastly in my eyes, but when I could not do anything else, I gave it away anyway. Big mistake, was no fun feeling giving away something I was almost ashamed of. However, I saved the situation a few days later by crocheting a new gift that I could proudly leave. After that, I decided to never give away something that I did not feel satisfied with.
Which one are you most proud of? I am proud of all my products, feel a bit like even babies you like them in different ways.
